New Year’s Eve in Times Square is an iconic celebration that draws people from all over the world to welcome the arrival of a new year in the heart of New York City. The vibrant atmosphere, dazzling lights, and the famous Times Square Ball Drop create an unforgettable experience. If you plan to join the festivities, key details must be kept in mind to ensure a smooth and enjoyable celebration. From arrival times to security measures, here’s everything you need to know before you go to Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

Celebrating New Year’s Eve in the Heart of NYC’s Times Square

The celebrations in Times Square begin at 6 p.m. and will be streamed online for the entirety of the six-hour event. The ball will be raised at 6 p.m., and musical guests and performances are scheduled throughout the evening. If you’re celebrating from home, you can enjoy the webcast from https://www.balldropshere.com/, NewYearsEve.NYCTimesSquareNYC.org, and  TimesSquareBall.net.

If you plan to attend the celebrations, you can find comprehensive information on the Official Times Square site. According to the website, the ball drop occurs from One Times Square, and screens are strategically placed throughout the area for better visibility. The site lists the best ball drop views along Broadway from 43rd to 50th Streets and along 7th Avenue north through 59th Street.

Viewing areas for the Times Square celebrations open at 3 p.m. Still, it is advisable to arrive early to account for security checkpoints, potential waiting times, and lines to get to the area. The Official Times Square site lists access to the 6th and 8th Avenue viewing areas, with entrances at 49th, 52nd, and 56th Streets. Please note that road closures will be on numerous roads, including Broadway, 6th Avenue, 8th Avenue, and other surrounding streets, impacting both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. This will affect public transportation, and pedestrian crossings will also be limited.

It’s important to remember that entrance to the viewing areas operates on a first-come, first-served basis. If you leave the area for any reason, including to grab a bite to eat at one of the nearby restaurants, you will forfeit your spot, and re-entry may not be permitted.

To ensure a smooth experience, it’s recommended to travel light and stay hydrated. Large bags, backpacks, coolers, chairs, blankets, umbrellas, and alcohol are strictly prohibited. It might come as a surprise, but it’s not uncommon for some attendees to wear diapers during the celebrations, as no public restrooms are available in the viewing areas. Therefore, planning for restroom breaks is essential.

Transportation will be widely impacted by the city’s New Year’s Eve events, so plan accordingly. MTA transportation services are well-prepared to accommodate the crowds heading to the large-scale celebrations in Times Square on New Year’s Eve. According to a recent press release, lines 1-7 and C, D, G, L, N, and Q will operate regularly with increased availability. The A line will run the express line until 2:45 a.m. To ensure a smooth commute, please note the following arrangements:

  • Subways will be running on their Sunday schedules on New Year’s Day.
  • Bus routes in Brooklyn, Bronx, Manhattan, and select buses in Queens will operate on a reduced weekday schedule, while the remaining Queens buses will operate on their regular weekday schedules.
  • It’s essential to be aware that buses in Manhattan will be affected by road closures due to the large-scale events.
  • On New Year’s Day, all five borough buses will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • Road closures on MTA bridges and tunnels will commence at 1:00 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and remain in effect until January 2, 2025.
  • We recommend checking the MTA app and website for detailed information on schedules, closures, and routes.
