Nobody knows New York City like a local. Some of the city’s notable locals are also the stars of Broadway. We talked with R&B sensation Deborah Cox, who stars as Glinda in the highly anticipated revival of THE WIZ, about her favorite places in New York City.

NYC With Deborah Cox from THE WIZ
Tell us about your current Broadway role!
Cox- I’m currently performing in the role of Glinda the Good Witch in the revival of The Wiz. We’ve just concluded a successful 13-city national tour. It’s wonderful to return to Broadway and settle in NYC for the next six months, performing at the Marquis Theatre. The energy here is unmatched, and I’m thrilled to be part of such an iconic production.
How did you get your start in performing, and in what other shows have you performed?
Cox– I began my journey in performing from a very young age, appearing on multiple stages over the years. This role marks my third appearance on Broadway, following performances in Jekyll & Hyde and Aida. Each experience has contributed significantly to my growth as an artist, and I’m embracing these diverse opportunities.
What is your favorite Broadway show to see as an audience member?
Cox- Recently, I had the pleasure of seeing The Notebook, directed by our very own Wiz director, Schele Williams. I absolutely loved it. I’m a sucker for a compelling love story, and this show was executed beautifully.
What are your favorite NYC local tips?
Cox- Sitting in New York’s traffic can easily consume a significant portion of your day, which is why I prefer to walk whenever possible. The city’s energy and vibrancy are unmatched, and there’s something truly special about immersing yourself in the city’s atmosphere during a walk.
If you’re going out for a night on the town in New York City, where would you go?
Cox- With a demanding Broadway schedule of eight shows a week, finding time for nights out can be a challenge. When I do manage to carve out some leisure time, it’s often spent attending wine tastings for my new rosé, Kazaisu.
Where are your favorite spots to send family and friends when they visit?
Cox- Beyond the usual tourist attractions, I always encourage my family and friends to explore the city’s cultural exhibits. These events give deeper insights into New York’s rich history and shed light on the contributions of individuals who may not always receive the recognition they deserve. It’s a nice way to gain a fuller understanding of the city’s heritage.
What is your favorite meal to enjoy in NYC?
Cox– NYC is filled with some of my favorite Caribbean and Italian spots!
