The Perfect Broadway Stay in New York City

CIVILIAN Hotel (ยฉJohnny Miller)

The CIVILIAN Hotel is more than just a hotelโ€”this hidden gem is filled with secrets of its own from the moment you step under its awning to the moment you walk out onto the rooftop patio. Located on the cusp of the Theater District and Hellโ€™s Kitchen, the property literally and metaphorically sits at the crossroads of local New York and the tourist gateway, providing the best of both worlds. I was invited in for a visit to see what all the fuss was about. Spoiler alert: I loved every second of my stay at this New York City hotel.ย

The Best Stay Off Broadway in NYC

Walking under the awning of the property, youโ€™ll walk up the stairs below a set of marquee lights reminiscent of those youโ€™ll find on every major Broadway stage. This is not a coincidence, and every single little detail you will find throughout the hotel was created by design. If youโ€™re a Disney fan who loves hidden Mickeys, youโ€™ll find the Broadway equivalent here at CIVILIAN Hotel, and not all of the โ€œEaster eggsโ€ are small. For instance, the plush seating youโ€™ll find just inside the entrance once sat backstage during The Music Man (so Hugh Jackman may have sat on it, too). Even the wallpaper of each floor represents a specific show (the wallpaper of the elevators is also worth a snapshot).

The front desk space is modern and minimalist, with no frills, and you donโ€™t really need the frills. The staff is efficient, friendly, and oh-so-helpful. Make your way into one of the three elevators to travel through the 27-story hotel to your room. Take in the wallpaperโ€”I loved it so much, I wished there was a fabric I could make clothes with. Speaking of wallpaper, each floor features a different wallpaper and a different theme. If you love interior design, itโ€™s worth a stop at every level to check out what each hallway looks like (youโ€™ll need your keycard for that, of course, because CIVILIAN felt very, very safe despite the busy week).

Having stayed in some truly… โ€œquaintโ€ hotel rooms in New York City (if youโ€™re reading that as tiny, you are correct), I wasnโ€™t sure what to expect of the rooms. The buildingโ€™s size didnโ€™t seem to suggest a lot of space; however, never judge a book by its cover (or a New York City building by its exterior). The rooms come in two sizesโ€” โ€œcozyโ€ and โ€œspacious.โ€ I toured every room type, and even the smallest ones were beautifully appointed with thoughtful details, immaculate use of space, and an abundance of light that made the rooms feel bright and airy even when space was a bit more scarce (even with rich, darker interiors, the rooms still exuded a brightness that should have been improbable). The spacious rooms were, indeed, spacious, and both room types had plenty of space for lounging. The rooms at CIVILIAN are the type of hotel rooms you actually want to spend time in, so try to make time to do so if you can. I like for my city days to be pretty packed, but I still made time for quick cat naps and breaks simply because the rooms were so comfortable.

There may be an abundance of restaurants in New York City, but try to catch a meal at the hotelโ€™s attached dining optionโ€”Rosevale Kitchen + Cocktail Room. During the day, the many windows provide a light, airy space, and at night, the dining room transforms into something moodier but just as appealing. The restaurant serves dinner and brunch, with a chic 60-minute pre-theater dinner for $60 from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. consisting of three courses. Happy Hour takes place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and offers $10 appetizers, $9 beer, and $13 wine. The Cocktail Room features Vermouth tastings and there’s no better place to do itโ€”there are roughly 200 kinds of Vermouth available here.

If youโ€™re a Broadway fan, make sure to check out the restaurantโ€™s Blue Room. The beautifully appointed space provides a captivating tribute to the theatrical arts, immersing visitors in the magic and history of Broadway. Curated by Rachel Hauck and David Rockwell, the exhibit showcases iconic artifacts such as the Red Boots from Kinky Boots and Elphabaโ€™s Hat (on loan from the American Theater Wing). Whether youโ€™re a theater enthusiast or new to the scene, this space offers a unique glimpse into Broadwayโ€™s legacy. Guests can also enjoy the complete Rosevale Cocktail Room menus while surrounded by a century of Broadwayโ€™s storied past.

After a day of exploring and a meal at Rosevale, make a final stop at Starchild Rooftop, 27 stories above the city streets. Here, youโ€™ll find an indoor-outdoor space that provides picturesque, panoramic views of the city in a charming, cozy atmosphere, unlike many other rooftop bars. Not a night owl? Take in a sunset here with a glass of wine and some light bites, and get ready for the early evening ahead.

Heading back out of Manhattan always feels bittersweet for me because there really is nowhere else on earth quite like it. Leaving CIVILIAN was especially somber as my visit had fallen during New York Fashion Week, and my departure fell after the city had thoroughly emptied out all its fashionistas and suddenly seemed oddly quiet, lending a strange sadness as the sun dipped below the horizon and I waited for my driver. Of the many trips Iโ€™ve taken to the city, this was among my favorite. The feeling of staying on the cusp of the local neighborhoods and tourist districts lent a unique feel, and the hotel was the most comfortable stay Iโ€™ve yet experienced in Manhattan. Until next time, CIVILIAN.
