Getting through TSA security checkpoints can be a pretty stressful part of travel, but with the proper preparation and a good strategy, it doesnโ€™t have to be anxiety-inducing. Following these tips and tricks can make the process smoother, faster, and more efficient while adhering to proper etiquette. One of the easiest ways to speed up the security process is by packing with TSA requirements in mind. Here are some packing tips to ensure smooth screening.

What Can I Bring?

Each traveler is allowed one quart-sized bag of liquids, gels, and aerosols in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less. Pack this bag in an easily accessible spot to pull it out quickly at the checkpoint. Anything that could be considered a liquid needs to fit in this bagโ€”for instance, TSA considers peanut butter and lipgloss to be liquids. Medical items do not count towards the limit, so check for any exemptions such as Insulin, inhalers, etc.

What items cannot go through TSA?

Check the TSAโ€™s list of prohibited items before packing. This includes sharp objects like scissors longer than 4 inches and other restricted items such as lighters or specific tools. The TSA website has a very detailed Q&A section outlining virtually any items you may want to take, whether theyโ€™re prohibited, and if they are allowed in check-in luggage, carry-ons, or both (they even address lightsabers). For an added bit of laughter, follow TSA on Instagramโ€”the account is both helpful and punny!

What is the fastest way to get through TSA?

Keep laptops, tablets, and other large electronics in an easy-to-reach section of your carry-on. Many security lanes require these devices to be placed in a separate bin for screening unless youโ€™re enrolled in TSA Pre-Check (more on that below). Some airports are stricter than others and may require you to remove virtually any electronicsโ€”regardless of the standard requirements, make sure you comply with TSA agent requests.

Wear slip-on shoes, avoid wearing excessive jewelry, and empty your pockets of metal objects. Belts and items with bulky buckles can also slow you down by triggering the metal detectors. Plan to remove anything with metal and generally just avoid wearing metal to make your checkpoint smoother.

Follow Security Line Etiquetteย ย

Proper behavior in the TSA line is not just about rules, it’s about creating a smoother experience for everyone. By keeping these etiquette points in mind, you’re not just following guidelines, you’re taking control of your travel experience.

Have your ID and boarding pass ready to present to the TSA agent. Fumbling for these documents can hold up the line unnecessarily. Nobody wants to be that person!

Move efficiently through the line, especially when collecting your items from the conveyor belt. Donโ€™t linger at the binsโ€”step aside to put on your shoes or reorganize your bag to keep the line moving if you can; start removing necessary items while you are in line to expedite the process.

Even if certain procedures feel tedious or inconvenient, it’s important to remember that they are in place for everyoneโ€™s safety. By following security guidelines, you’re not just being compliant, you’re contributing to a secure and confident travel environment.

Speed Through Airport Security

Both programs, TSA Pre-Check and CLEAR, can significantly reduce the time you spend on security lines, making them a relief for frequent travelers. These options can make the security process less stressful and more efficient, allowing you to focus on your journey.

TSA Pre-CheckTSA Pre-Check is a program designed to streamline the airport security process for approved travelers. Participants enjoy expedited screening, where they donโ€™t have to remove belts, shoes, or any light jackets, and can also avoid removing laptops and liquids in their bags. By enabling a quicker and more efficient security experience, TSA Pre-Check is particularly beneficial for frequent travelers or anyone looking to reduce stress during air travel.

The application process involves a background check, an in-person interview, and a fee, but the convenience it offers often makes it a worthwhile investment for many. Conversely, if you plan to travel internationally even just once in the next five years, consider signing up for Global Entry. This program costs just a little more than TSA Pre-Check but allows expedited access when coming back into the USA from international locations.

CLEARย ย

CLEAR uses biometric verification to identify you and expedite your passage through airport security. By scanning your fingerprint or iris, the program allows you to skip to the front of the security line. While itโ€™s a separate service from TSA Pre-Check, combining the two can make your travel experience even more seamless by minimizing delays on both ends.

Getting through TSA security doesnโ€™t have to be a daunting experience. By packing wisely, maintaining good etiquette, and taking advantage of services like CLEAR and TSA Pre-Check, you can make the process quicker and less stressful. Preparing ahead of time ensures youโ€™ll have more time to relax and enjoy your travel.
